GOT BEATS???????

let's talk about beats.....okay when I was coming up making beats under the late great Jdilla we kept things simple with only a few tools... scripture was our master piece. The main tools of choice was turntables ,mpc 3000, records , and sometimes the trusty sp 1200 which only had 13 seconds of sampling time .. You pulled that out only when you wanted those crunchy drums like I did on the Trinity album on "Disco"...most producers today flip beats on computer programs like fruity loops, reason and many others.. and now a days even the art of record digging isn't as sacred as it use to be with producers getting samples from blog sites and even itunes...don't get get me wrong I'm not mad at the new Millennium approach to beat making cause some of my favorite producers have made great music using these new tools.. Shit, six years ago I couldn't make beats on a plane but now the options are endless ... I feel a little nostalgic so I prefer to use a little of the old with the new ... So the question I got for y'all producers out there ..Some of you who are new to the process and other old heads... What are the new tricks of trade, and are you familar with these old school tools that I came up on....What's your choice??? -T3

Still sampling off wax, chopping, sequencing on the MPC 2500, after that record into Logic with a Motu Ultralite, and finish up the job in there.

It really seems like the digging aspect of beat making is back burner at this point, I'm not hating, I just find it easier to pull out a record, turn the computer off and be distraction free.. NO TWITTER! NO BLOGS... :P

I didnt know you could get a raw sample off of itunes but as far as me i prefer to use FL studio because its what i started out on and when it comes to sampling it kinda makes it easy to isolate a piece of a song and then manipulate that piece to my liking.

with that said i do use keyboards, guitars and other instruments when i make beats

i feel you. i got the MPC 60II. got that in '98 after i left Unique ReCording Studios in new york. i dig still. but its all about mood for me. one day im sampling like krazy. the next month its all keyboards. i pissed kause i spent money on modules and the MPC. now people doing beats on a free reasons program and making hits lol. i just saw a korg program for the nintendo ds i may get so i kan get busy on the train.

i'll always dig, thats just in me...
after 20yrs of being surrounded by records it'll never stop.

i've been a hardware fanatic, making beats on the asr-10 and the w-30 since the early 90's... i've have everything from akai to kurzweil.

a year and a half ago i moved out to phx and didn't want to bring all my equpment out here so i started fresh with a macbook, reason 4 a, an axiom 25 midi controller and some monitors... now i'm hooked on the software. i still cant fuck with fruity loops but using reason and incorporating it with everything i already know has sonically made my music better.

I don't have the money for an MPC, or any other hardware, so I'm usin FL 7, and an old program I've had for awhile called Magix Music Maker 6, I only use that for chopping.

I chop out of both mp3's and vinyl, but I find it alot better to sample from vinyl. But other than that, just sequence and mix everything in FL.

The way I see it the less you have to make beats makes you that much better. If you can make something dope with a tape recorder and a 4 track, then the sky is the limit with 10000 records, an mpc , and pro tools. You just got to use what you have, and I think it sounds more human.

I JUST DEPENDS, 3!!! WHEN I JUST WANNA DO SOMETHING REAL QUICK, I GO FL STUDIO, BUT WHEN I JUST WANNA JUST POUND THE PADS(relieve stress-hahahaha)& JUST CHOP ONIONS, I GO MPC 2000xl!!! BUT YOU KNOW WHAT'S FUNNY?... A LOT OF CATS THOUGHT I HAD AN MPC WHEN I FIRST STARTED USING FL STUDIO... AS FAR AS SAMPLE FODDER, MAN, I SAMPLE FROM CD's AS WELL AS LP's...WHATEVA THE SPIRIT LEADS ME TO DO....STAY UP & GOD BLESS!!!

I use FL, and frankly I don't see why so many hate on it. I've been doing beats since 94, and have used both software AND hardware, and I prefer software.

I'll tell you what though, I miss my ASR 10!

started out years ago on the MPC 60II and a midi keyboard controller, graduated to Cubase with Planet Phatt and other modules, and now settled on Sonar with tons of VSTs and my own drum kits. I love vinyls, but can also find some interesting stuff online as well.

MPC 2KXL, turntable and Mackie's Tracktion II. I want to expand gradually into the vintage synths and possibly a MPC 2500. I just got a copy of Reason 4, but haven't even loaded it yet.

Samples can come from anywhere. A record, a tape, an mp3. I have the bad habit of thinking in loops when I hear a sample.

I then chop the sample up in a sound editor so I can have a bunch of puzzle pieces. I will usually do all my samples at once for a few different tracks.

Then go back and track a beat and lay a sample and try arranging the track in Live.

I realize that an MPC would make my life alot easier, but I have always been about jerry rigging stuff and doing it the hard way.

Sp-1200 & the MPC 2000XL is all I use, to me this is the best combination of new & old. I run most drums hits through the SP. before using them in the MPC.
MIDI'd up together these two are all I need.
You have to go diggin', its the most beautiful part of the process... I like being limited to the records that I find. It keeps me searching for more. You have to embrace new technology but you also have to carry on a tradition....peace&props-pjs.

after saving from my wack dj gig, i'm just starting with my mpc 1000!

i can see the merit in digging in overall sound quality and the sacred art of diggin. it just doesn't feel right sampling from tracks that are already downsampled. even cds lose that juicy bass.

someone mentioned a korg game for the ds. i'm totally getting this for christmas! :P ive gotta try it.

I started about 4 years ago on fruity loops. I had a rhapsody unlimited streaming account and i'd just rip old songs form there to sample. Then i got a Numark table, and really did digggin thru my parents records, friend's parent's records, and even Goodwill. It's just my computer, my midi board, and my mic and i want more, but i know i don't really need more.

Maan, I'm on my old school vibe Two turntables,Microphone, Headphones,mixer,5000 records,MPC 2000, Rhodes, Korg Ms2000.
The Benefit of software is You don't have to worry about EQ'ing your joints because the sounds come eq'ed out of the box and it makes the process of coming out with a banging product much easier than it ever has been before, especially if you don't have a big studio budget, Although I have witnessed cats make some bangin joints with Fl and Reason and these other software programs, I still prefer my HardWare as opposed to software.

I use Fruity loops now, use to use acid but I sucked at it.

My crew uses MPC 1000, 2000xl, and FL. Personally I love my 1000, but my homeboy's 2kXL has that low end sound...like the filters are just absurd and raw on there. So we do a lot of mixdowns on it for that good home cooked feel.

And in regards to finding samples and such...there is nothing like blowing a good Saturday at the vinyl shop and then getting to the register only to find out you lightweight dropped enough bread for a pair of kicks on 25 random pieces.

We'll be checkin this blog (from Ohio) frequently I know that...props on all the heat ya'll have provided over the years and the many albums I've kept on heavy rotate.

well i've been making beats for awhile now... i started out with a just a triton and could get the sound i wanted out of it... then i went on a fuckin rampage buying all kinds of equiptment and software synths and mpc etc... now all i got is my mp and i make the illest shit i've ever made.... all off wax... i love finding samples, and i love watching other cats trying to figure out what it is... you'll never know...

I am a MPC2000XL,SP-606,SP-303 dude i still hit the wax spots i have sample cd's but there is nothing like finding that gem that you dug for all day get home throw it on the turns and just let it sink in, you may not chop it right off top but later when you come back BLISS! The cpu is cool to mix and record vocals cause it gives you a big studio set up wit one click i used the 16 track recorders and i loved them cause they still have that raw sound on the play back. It comes down to what works for you i wish i had the ends to grab a MPC3000,or a SP-1200 just to hear that shit frist hand. It seemed like when i started that if you did have those 3000's and 1200's that you couldn't capture that sound but Pete Rock showed that's not ture if you got it you got.

Although I used to have the MPC3000 and have used the MPC2000XL for many years now, I still prefer the SP1200 over anything else! It's got the dopest sound for Hip Hop, and it's fast, easy and fun to use. In fact me and two friends have made three full beat-mixtapes of SP1200 beats we have made, thats more than 150 beats or so! Be sure to download them (SPSHIT Vol.1-3) from fredfades.goodshitradio.com under SP1200 category No bullshit, just straight up purel Hip Hop music.

By the way we also made a Slum Village "The Look Of Love" Remix on the SP1200, I think it's pretty hot:

I use the MPC 3000 too. The only thing is that you cant use more than 1 program at a time in the 3000 so I keep my breaks and drums on my computer. I find the drums I like in FL studio or just playing breaks in windows media player. Then I chop em in recycle and eq them in FL studio then I either load them on a floppy or Ill just sample them into the MPC straight out of the computer. I ONLY sample from vinyl! I got all of those Paul Nice Drum Library records and you can make tracks for DAYS wit those drums! They are ridiculous!!!

Yo T3 what do you use to save and play your drums on? Do u use that Instant replay machine? Or do you have all your drums saved on the computer?

i'm running an MPC2000, an MP-7, and Logic Pro 8 on my macbook and imac... i have thousands of joints to sample off wax, cds, and mp3's also... it depends on how i'm feeling on a particular day what i use on beats...

i'm still diggin be on the loopside of life, that's what it's all about, go out an dig, back home got that listening pleasure, these great moments discovering them loops but also listening to the whole record (if it's worth)... working with turntabels, recording tracks, cutting up loops in wavelab, set it together in cubase, also the drums, would be easier on an mpc or sp or something like that but i still do it my way, but for sure i'll get into mpc or/and sp someday...
